Follicular unit extraction in Medellín, Colombia

FUE hair transplant before and after

An FUE hair transplant before and after shows the same patient’s thinning area before surgery and once the transplanted hair has grown in, which usually takes 12 to 18 months. Every case on this page was treated at Dharma Hair in Medellín with FUE, done by hand (manual FUE) or with the ARTAS iX robot.

What is an FUE before and after? FUE (follicular unit extraction) moves hair follicles one by one from the back of the head to the thinning area. An FUE before and after should show two areas: the top or front of the scalp, where the result is, and the donor area at the back, where the follicles came from. A comparison that shows only the first one tells half the story.

FUE before and after: four real cases

These four cases show the areas patients ask about most: the crown and the hairline. All of them had FUE; we do not label a case manual or robotic unless that is documented.

Results vary from person to person. They depend on how much hair has been lost, the density of the donor area, hair thickness and color, and aftercare.

What the donor area looks like after FUE

After FUE, the donor area has small round marks instead of a line. Each follicle comes out through its own tiny opening. Those openings heal as pale dots spread across the back and sides of the head, and the hair around them hides them.

Manual FUE: each follicle is extracted one by one.

What this means in practice:

  • Short hair is possible. With a typical cut, the marks are hidden by the surrounding hair. If you plan to shave your head to the skin, say so at your assessment.
  • The donor area is limited. The back of the head has a finite number of follicles. Taking too many from one spot can leave it looking thin, which is why extraction is spread out and planned from the first session.
  • It heals fast. The tiny openings close within days, and redness at the back usually fades in the first one to two weeks.

This is why we ask for a photo of the back of your head in your assessment. The donor area decides how much can be done.

FUE on the day of surgery

These photos are not results. They show the scalp right after the grafts are placed.

The dots you see are the placed grafts, with small crusts that come off in the first one to two weeks. On the day of surgery you can already see the design: where the hairline sits and how the grafts are spread to look natural once they grow.

Timeline

How an FUE result develops month by month

Results come in stages. Knowing them in advance keeps the shedding phase from feeling like a setback.

Weeks 1–2

Healing

Crusts and redness heal, at the front and at the back.

Weeks 2–8

Shedding

Most transplanted hairs shed. This is expected; the follicles stay in place.

Months 3–6

New growth

Fine new hairs start to grow.

Months 6–12

Visible change

The hair thickens and most of the change shows.

Months 12–18

Final result

Final density and texture.

Technique

Manual FUE or ARTAS iX: does the result look different?

No, the final result depends more on planning than on the tool. Both methods are FUE: they extract follicles one by one and leave no linear scar. What changes is how the extraction is done.

ARTAS iX

A robotic system guided by imaging selects and extracts the follicles under the surgeon's control. About ARTAS iX

The result you see a year later comes from the hairline design, how the grafts are handled and placed, and the quality of your donor area. The surgeon recommends one method or the other after reviewing your case. To see the robot at work, visit our ARTAS robotic hair transplant before and after page.

Frequently asked questions

Does FUE leave visible scars?

FUE leaves small round marks, not a line, and with short or medium hair they are usually hidden. They can show if the head is shaved to the skin or if too much was extracted from one area.

Do I need to shave my head for FUE?

The donor area is trimmed short so the follicles can be extracted. How much is trimmed depends on your case and is planned at your assessment.

When can I see the final FUE result?

The final result usually takes 12 to 18 months. Most of the visible change comes between months 6 and 12.

Were these patients treated with manual FUE or with ARTAS iX?

All of them had FUE, and we do not label a case manual or robotic unless that is documented. Both methods extract follicles one by one. Your surgeon recommends one after reviewing your donor area.

What are the risks of an FUE hair transplant?

The most common effects are temporary: swelling, redness, crusts, numbness and the expected shedding of transplanted hair. Less often, a patient may get an infection, inflamed follicles (folliculitis) or lower graft growth than expected. Our medical team explains these risks during your assessment.

Who is not a good candidate for FUE?

FUE is not a good fit when the donor area is too thin to cover the bald area, when there is an active scalp condition or an uncontrolled health problem, or when the expected density is more than the donor hair can provide. Your assessment tells you which case applies before you plan anything.
